Hamlet - Was Prince Hamlet Wacko? :: essays research papers

In Shakespeares " juncture", the main character offers a puzzling and ambiguous persona. Throughout the play, Hamlet much contradicts himself. He seems to balance the virtues of "playing a role", with being true to himself. Further proof of these conflicting personas are demonstrated by his actions and inactions. The ambiguity celebrated here, lies in two conflicting mannerisms displayed by the young Hamlet One that is perfectly calm and rational and another which displays madness. These conflicting behaviors are related indoors Hamlets internal struggle-to kill Claudius for revenge of his fathers murder or act responsibly, and await further proof of Claudius guilt. Throughout the play, Hamlet teeters on the brink of insanity bring forth by his actions, or inactions.Hamlets sanity is clarified, in the first act, by tellments and feelings expressed within his dialogue. When asked about his depressed appearance and demeanor by Gertrude, Hamlet replies, "Seems, peeress? Nay, it is. I know not "seems" (1037, line 76). This relates the idea that Hamlet is what he appears to be. Later, he clearly makes a statement about his mental health when he commits himself to avenge his fathers murder. This quote wholeows the reader to follow Hamlets train of thought in regards to his role as student, mourning son, and Prince to the throne"Ill wipe away all worthless fond records, All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past That youth and observation copied there, And thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of my mavin" (1054, line 100). Hamlet is stating his utmost commitment to nothing short of revenge of his fathers death. At this juncture in the play, there is little doubt about his state of mind, or intentions. However, the next act belies Hamlets sanity and reason. In act two, Hamlet appears again, although it now becomes apparent he has lost the conviction he demonstrated earlier-to exculpate his d estiny as prescribed by the ghost of his father. During this act, Hamlet spends most of his time reading and talking with Polonius, Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, and the players. Not until the very end of this second act, does Hamlet refer to his filial duty to avenge his father. Instead of carrying out the destiny described by his fathers spirit-role of the vengeful son-Hamlet exhibits insane behaviors. This is illustrated by his statements to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, "I know not-lost my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises..." (1071, line 282).

Justice In Orestes :: The Oresteia Equality Justice Essays

Justice in OrestesAeschylus is primarily concerned with the nature of justice. In the trilogy TheOresteia, the Akhaians evolve from an older, more primitive autocratic phase angle ofjustice, to a new concept of civil justice devised by Athena. He confronts thecontrast amid the old and new orders, the lives of the members of the Houseof Atreus, and the serious moral questions that Orestes abhorrence presents. The case against Orestes is strong. The son admits to striking down his mother,in violation of the sacred tenant of kinship. But I came back, my years ofexile weatheredkilled the one who fag me, I wont deny it, killed her inrevenge. (Eumenides lines 476-478) This shows that Orestes was fully aware ofthe act he was committing, that he willfully committed it, and that he mustsuffer for it. The bond between mother and child was broken when Orestesmurdered Clytaemnestra. Marriage, arguably, is a tenant of Zeus and theOlympians. In the old order of things, family is by blood only. A husband and wife have no blood relation, yet the son is of the same blood as his parents. The Furies right to vengeance cannot be dismissed.Clytaemnestra is one who upheld the laws of the Furies. Agamemnons murder ofIphegenia at Aulis was excellent outrage. Yes he had the heart to sacrifice hisdaughter , to bless the war (Agamemnon lines 222-223) Agamemnon killed hisown blood relation in order to sail for Troy. This too, is a terrible crime, seemingly of the same weight as Orestes act. Clytaemnestra believed she wasjustified in avenging her daughter, because her husband violated a sacred tenantof the old gods. Here is Agamemnon, my husband made a corpse by this righthanda masterpiece of justice. Done is done. (Agamemnon lines 1429-1431) Thisshows a clear morality behind Clytaemnestras motives. She appears to havejustification for her actions. The curse on the House of Atreus is fulfilled. In the last lines of Agamemnon the chorus foreshadows Orestes refurbishment.Clytaemnestra re sponds by saying to her new husband, We will set the house inorder once for all. (Agamemnon lines 1708) The choruss purpose for suggestingOrestess return is to show that the house is not yet cleansed of the curse..Like his mother, Orestes possesses what he believes to be a just motive forrevenge. Unlike his mother, however, Orestes has reservations about killing. Hedoes not offer to strike down his mother, but realises that he must. The defenseof Orestes is rooted in the fact that Apollo ordered him to do so.

The Importance of Education Essay -- Personal Narratives Education Sch

The Importance of Education Come on sweetie, you can do it These words have constantly been spoken to me ever since I was a child, and by my parents enforcing these words towards me they inspired me to achieve all that I am able too. In the Mexican culture there are many of us who yearn to learn new things yet there are many of our people who instead of lending a helping hand they get-up-and-go each other downward. With this mark fact in mind I push myself to become an educated person with a degree so that I can prove to myself that if you want it you will get it. My family has always been very keen on education. One of my childhood memories is that of my father telling us The barely great inheritance I can leave you with is that of your education, because nobody can take that what you have learned away from you. My mother also told us that if there came a day in which we had to leave our husbands for any type of abuse we would not be empty-handed since we could be able to support our self as well as our families. With my parents always asking me how was school today, or attending all (well not all) but most PTA meetings they showed me that they care a lot for my future. I wish to make them happy and to know that they did a good job in raising me since education is one of my top priorities. Another top precedency that I believe influences me is to testify, from books about magic sorcerers to Biology or chem. Textbooks, (Who knew right?) I love to explore new things and meet different people. Reading is the key element (I believe) of wisdom since it opens new boundaries to ones mind. I remember in 5th grade the new accelerated reader program was barely starting and the upthrust of it was breathtaking. ( not really but i... ...assignments were this past year. My senior year my teacher was named Joanna Schmidt, she inspired us too write many different literature works. We read many Shakespearean works as well as books by Alice Walker, some of the amazing stories we were contained satire and we were asked to identify it in the different books. Gullivers Travels, tolerate New World, and the movie Gatttica, were mainly written with satire. This was interesting to me because we had to really use our brains and analyze what the author was trying to get across to us as the reader. right off that I am in college I look forward to learning new things and I am glad that I have made in this far with an extreme amount of hard work yet my race is not over. I wish to add more inspirations to my list so that when I am older my children can look up to me for the enjoyment of learning I provide them with.

The Internet: An End to the Cultural and Historical Diversity of Style

IntroductionThe Internet is a fairly new tool and has been recently increasing in popularity. Where it was once insufferable that a new way to stay in touch could challenge the telephone, the Internet has managed to do so. With the Internet, one can do nearly anything that one would motive to do from keeping in touch with relatives, writing research papers, and watching ones bank account. Generally, everything done over the Internet is quick and effortless. Since the Internet is relatively new, in that respect have been relatively few scientific studies done on it. Therefore, the discussion of the Internet in this paper will be limited to personal experiences and interpretations. This establish will describe a new style of quickness that has emerged as a result of the Internet. The style has been modified and tested by those on the Internet, creating a homogenous way of communicating which is ending the diversity in composition. In turn, the style has affected the Internet, makin g quickness a priority to services on the web. By looking at common uses of the Internet, it is apparent that a new kind of style based on instant gratification and convenience has emerged, which in turn has influenced the Internet.Communicating InstantaneouslyOne of the more prevalent services of the Internet is instant messaging, which has helped to shape a style of quickness. There are a plethora of messaging services to choose from, such as AOLs Instant Messenger, ICQ, and MSN Messenger. Instant messaging is exactly what it sounds like- messages are fictitious characterd and sent instantly to another person. This type of interaction has slowly been replacing the telephone as it allows people to stay in contact over long distances without having to pay a fee. Acco... ... style has as well affected the Internet. The need for speed has evolved so that the success of services and other offerings for the Internet, such as connection speed, is highly important. The style of speed i n the arena of today will become increasingly accepted and used as more and more people join the Internet craze.Footnotes1. Beard2. Beard3. Pastore4. count on at the Graph5. Hades vs. DemonsGreek Mythology and Religion Mythology is the study and explanation of myth of a particular culture. Myth, is a cultural phenomenon that can befool some different point of views. Mythology and religion in the past still influence today. It is difficult to imagine that ancient myth and history has had a tremendous tint not just in todays culture but also in lifestyle and religious beliefs. To some extend, people rather believe that there is no consequence in your sins in the afterlife. Mythic stories, for example, show how the world began, how humans and animals were created, and how certain manners, and specific human activities originated. Ancient Greek religion has been the main float of investigation and research from classic times to the modern day. In Greek mythology, Hades, also known as Pluto, is the god and ruler of the underworld, which is the kingdom of the dead. He is an futile god, who is extensively concerned with expanding his society. Often Hades is severely cautious and selective on permitting any of his people to leave. Its unquestionable that even the commander of the underworld had go in love with Persephone. Although the relationship between Hades and Persephone appears to have established badly, their union was peaceful. For most, life in the underworld was not enjoyable. Its more like a tormented and miserable dream, full of shadows, without sunlight or hope, a joyless place where the dead slowly fade into nonexistence. Its a realm not only for the sinners but also for the saints. When we speak of demons we immediatelymagine of a red evil spirit with an extended pointy tail. But many of us ask ourselves, Demons? Where and how did demons come about? The rule book demon is derived from the Greek daimon, which in ancient times signified various kinds of spirits or semi-gods, which particularly werent evil. The term demons was not always understood to have the absolutely negative indication that it does today. Our curr ent use of the term Demon is a malignant spirit, which usually from the New Testament. However there is still great indecision as to whether or not demons are considered to be distinct and separate from the devil and his fallen angels. It is mentioned in the New Testament, chapter 5, verse 12, by Josepheus a method of exorcism which is prescribed by Solomon. Prevailed or succeeded greatly among them down to the present time .

Fairtale Essay

One of the most intumesce kn let, well adored and influential literary genre of literary works is the butt tale. A fairy tale is defined by the Oxford dictionary as A kidrens story of magical and imaginary beings and lands. overtime the concept of fairy tales has veerd. fay tales argon being re-written and re-illustrated constantly, which claims fairy tales appealing to every generation. Fairy tales broaden the imagination of children. They allow us gain an brainwave into a world of magic and adventure- a world we will never experience but fantasize ab bulge. Fairy tales atomic number 18 no lissomg if not naturalistic and it is their cynicism that keeps them lively. (Opie, 1980, p. 19) A characteristic of the fairy tale, as told directly, is that it is unbeliev up to(p). Although a fairy tale is seldom a tale about fairy-folk and does not necessarily even peculiarity a fairy, it does contain an enchantment or other supernatural element that is clearly imaginary. (Opie, 1980 p. 18). The origin of fairy tales is commonly unknown and more often than not never discovered by the reader. French writers Catherine Bernard, Marie-Jeanne Lheitier, Marie-Catherine dAulnoy argon believed to be chiefly responsible for the establishment of the fairytale as a literacy genre in Europe. (Zipes, 2006,p. 13) of the 1960s. n singletheless, it was Italian writers Giovan Francesco Straparola and Giambattista Basile who played a major role in the rise of literacy in Europe. This is one of the best kept secrets that is well worth unlocking because it reveals just how most tied the literacy fairy tale as genre is to spread of the civilizing process throughout Europe. (Zipes, 2006, p. 13) However, it was the beguile of Boccaccios Decamerone that led to the production of various collections of novelle that had an impact on the literacy fairy tale as a short narrative.Straparola was the graduation exercise to publish his collection Le piacevoli notti (1550 and 1553) fr om the example Boccaccio had set. Straparola was different from previous writers. He was the first European writer to adapt many tales from oral tradition, creating approximately fourteen literacy fairy tales in his collection of seventy four novella. (Zipes, 2006, p. 14) Straparolas work ca apply some literary argument and at one time one of his collections was banned by the pope in 1791. This was due to themes which Straparola had included in his work.He introduced plain earthy language and small construe of power struggles in Italian ball club. Basile shared homogeneous views on power and civility. (Zipes, 2006). Even form this early stage, fairy tales have endlessly been connected to power, social class and gender stereotyping. Both Straparola and Basile recognised that Italian principalities were being damaged through family conflicts, the change in commerce and trade and war. They used fairy tales as a written callion of broaching their concern over the unexpected chan ge of norms on military man behaviour. Although time passes and things change, fairytales have not dated. The virtuous fairy tales that Basile and Straparola once told are still being told to children today all over the world. Thanks to the origination of the fairytale by Straparola and Basil we still swan on its narrative strategy to see how dangerous it is to think that we live in more civilized and better world than the realms of the past. (Zipes, 2006) For centuries newfangled children have been captivated by fairy tales. Tales of witches, wizards, princes and princesses, fairy godmothers and baddies alike have been influencing how children view the world around them. This appears particularly true in the case of young girls, with whom these stories seem to resonate. However living in a contemporary 22nd century society the dot needs to be posed are these stories, written centuries ago, still providing a relevant and realistic portrayal of fe priapic role models to the yout h of today? Or are these folktales of prince charming and happily ever by and bys corrupting ideals from infancy and setting these young girls up for disappointment? Women today have hang along away from their 18th century counterparts.Women have fought for years to be able to vote, work, raise children as a lone parent and run a household. Women have gained their right to respect and independence in a world that is no longer dominated my males. These rights are marked as historic events that women are extremely proud of. However still today, when educating children we use fairy tales as means of communicating, although sometimes indirectly, the role women should play in invigoration. For example, in fairy tales, the concept of smasher is outlined very clearly. Beauty is expressed as a fleshly necessity. The leading lady in the typical fairy tale is usually described and illustrated as a cleaning lady holding features considered physically attractive to males, a thin figure, g lowing skin, red lips, symmetrical facial features and well attired. In the undefiledal tale of Sleeping Beauty Aurora has red lips as red as the red red rose fair skin, blue eyes long blonde hair and an impossibly thin figure. This seems to be the universal concept of what ravisher is among all the fairy tales that Walt Disney have produced. This image of beauty is in stark contrast to the reality in which we live into today. This depiction of the need for beauty is not the only oppose stereotype conveyed in fairy tales. Instead of being able to defend and stick up for themselves, women are forever relying on males to redeem them. Whether it be the handsome prince charming or the father figure, a male, nevertheless is always there to save the day and resolve whatever predicament has arisen in order for all involved except the villain to live happily ever after. The act of stereotyping serves as a short-cut to the way that the majority of the state views our culture. Therefore, t hough we might not completely agree with the way in which gender roles are represented in these fairy tales, it still serves us well in a sense that we might gain a basic understanding of what it means to be a male and what it means to be a female. Whether personally accepted or rejected, the notion of males being dominant and females being subordinate has been deeply embedded into our cultures view of the gender roles. The villain is also an interesting stereotype which is evident in all fairy tales.Villains are portrayed as ugly, malicious, jealous characters. They are almost always characterised by being an evil step-mother, wicked queen, a witch or an evil mother in law. The job of the villain in a fairytale is to make life difficult for the leading protagonist. The queen in Basiles version of Snow color is described as a murderous and unnatural, unsexed anomaly who tricks Talia (Warner ,1995,p. 220). However, evil they are, they always play a powerful female role in all the f airy tales I have chosen to discuss. To consider whether the portrayals of women in classic fairy tales are genuine role models for young girls, I will be examining and referring to the following books Cinderella , Beauty and the living organism, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the seven dwarfs, Mulan and Shrek. Certainly by examining classic fairy tales it is obvious that the central female character is continuously presented as being beautiful. In the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, the story begins with Once upon a time there lived a rich merchant with three pretty daughters. The youngest was the prettiest of the there and she was called beauty. From the very rise of the story, emphasis is prescribe on how beautiful Belle is in the fairytale. The fact that the lead character is appreciated for her beauty alone speaks multitudes about the message the story gives out to its reader and indeed to young girls. There is the threatened union of an almost supe rnaturally beautiful girl with a hideous monster. (Iona,Peter, 1980,p. 180) The fairytale puts emphasis on how beautiful Belle is and how ugly the beast is.Similarly Sleeping Beauty had a beautiful face and she thought beautiful thoughts, Snow White grew into a beautiful woman, when Cinderella arrived at the ball everyone wondered Who is that beautiful girl? and The Little Mermaid was the youngest, and most beautiful, daughter of Mer King. The initial portrayal of these women is innocent and positive. Any young girl would aspire to possess such favourable qualities and attractiveness. Being beautiful and falling in know with prince charming, then living happily-ever-after, seems to be the most important outcome of these fairy tales. But the question we have to ask ourselves is -are these harmless tales instilling false ideas of what life is like for children? One may not think that reading such biased existent to a child could possibly have a lasting effect on their perceptions of how one should conform in society, however according to Bettelheim A child trusts what the fairy tale tells, because its world view accords with his own (Bettelheim, 1991, p. 45) The fairytale is so convincing to the child, as the tale matches the childs thinking, approach and understanding of the world.Bettelheim states these fairytales direct the childs own thinking about his own development, permitting the child to draw his own conclusion, yet since some classic fairy tales are known to display gender stereotyping, we must ask ourselves, what implication this has on childrens perspectives of specific gender roles in society if the child is drawing his/her own conclusion after reading the fairy tale. Fairy tales portray a black and white view of society. Males are frequently portrayed as the head of the family, who are physically and emotionally strong, and whose sphere exists outside of the home.Females are frequently portrayed as dependent, physically and emotionally weak, an d belong inside the home. This depiction of the male and female roles sends a very false and blinding message to its audience. On the other hand it can be argued that stereotypes are a part of life/society. The act of stereotyping serves as a short-cut to the way that the majority of the population views our culture. Therefore, though we might not completely agree with the way in which gender roles are represented in these fairy tales, it still gives a basic understanding of what it means to be a male and what it means to be a female.A similar theme seems to run through all the fairy tales I have chosen. All of the female protagonists are punished in some way as a result of their physical fortune. In Snow White, the evil queen wants the fairest of them all so a search is sent for Snow White to be killed. Snow White ends up cleaning, tidying and cooking for seven dwarfs in the forest as payment for letting her stay. Similarly in Cinderella, the beautiful Cinderella is made handmaid to her step mother and step sisters. Cinderella is isolated in the house and ignored by her step sisters and step mother.Sleeping Beauty is cursed from the moment she was born as a result of her beauty. A wicked witch was furious that she wasnt invited to the babys banquet so she put a spell on her to remain asleep for a hundred years. Belle in Beauty and the Beast finds herself in a similar situation she is one of three sisters and the only one who cleans and cooks as a result of her misfortune. The women all have a variety of traits in common. All of the female characters I have mentioned display admirable qualities. All of the women are kind and gentle but these female characters are viewed as being passive and submissive. These women depend on the male characters in the tales to be either salve or to be happy. This sends out an extremely negative stereotype to young readers, presenting that womens job in life is cook, clean and wait for Prince Charming to come in order to be hap py. According to Bettelheim it is childs life experiences that teach the child the right manner, he goes on to say when children are young, it is literature that carries such information best. (Tartar, 1999, p. 69) If this is the case then children reading heavily stereotyped tales from an early age will impact their manner and possibly the way they view the gender roles. Bettelheim also states that a childs mind is animistic and children especially young girls are vulnerable to believing that being beautiful and run into prince charming are key goals and will result in a happily ever after. West (2004) argues that books are such a major influence in the formation of childrens values and attitudes that adults need to monitor nearly every word that children read. (Hunt, 1999, p. 5) If this is the case, should we be reading child fairy tales? It was the feminist reason that brought a closer examination of gender roles in fairytales. In Lissa Pauls article she argues that While chi ldrens literature is predicated on the notion that children are essentially blank or naive and are in need of protection and instruction, then issues of suitability or unsuitability are important. (Hunt, 1999, p121) This idea seems to be evident in feminists attitudes with regards the lead female character in fairy tales.Feminists feel that these women over rely on their beauty and each wait, in some way or another, for their Prince Charming to come rescue them. According to Lissa Pauls article, while discussing Cinderella, she states that Most of us- women, children and feminist critics, I hypothecate dont want to be seen valuing riches. Or princes for that matter (Hunt, 1999, p. 112). However many of the fairy tales chosen for the essay have the common theme of a male hero rescuing or saving the female heroine in the story. They solely depend on the prince to come save them in the end. In Cinderella her family feels she is inferior to them and so she serves as a slave in her own home. They were very unkind to her and ordered her about from morning until night. She is too weak to stand up to them and so waits for a prince to come rescue her. Similarly in Sleeping Beauty she sleeps for one hundred years before a prince comes and rescues her, in Beauty and the Beast, Belle in the long run ends up with a handsome prince the beast disappeared and in his place stood a handsome prince. In Snow White after she ate the poison apple, she lay peacefully in her coffin until a prince fell in love with her and rescued her she opened her eyes and on seeing the handsome prince she fell in love with him. There is evidently a strong portrayal of physical beauty in these fairy tales and these images of the female protagonist gives a very weak and negative display of womens abilities and aspirations. On the contrary, however, a very interesting aspect is in Beauty and the Beast. Belle demonstrates having a mind of her own compared to her female counterparts whose main decoc t was to find their handsome prince using their good looks.Belle looks beyond physical appearance and recognises the good man in the Beast she has not mistaken a homo lover for a monster, like Psyche, or failed to see a good man beneath the surface.. (Warner, 1995,p. 307) This follows her gradual arousal of both attraction and sexuality for the Beast throughout the course of the fairytale until he unsurprisingly too turns into a handsome prince at the end. Beautys wooer has the appearance of a monster, and only after Belle has overcome her aversion for his vile shape can the monster be seen to be a handsome prince. (Opie, 1980, p. 180) The notion of being socially stable is put forward to us. Once these women are saved by their Prince Charming and fall in love with him, they are rewarded with a luxurious life as a princess and will ultimately live happily ever after. The Little Mermaid was written by Hans Christen Andersen in 1836 and was released by Walt Disney in 1989. This fairy tale was hoped to go against the grain and portray a leading women who wasnt submissive or passive but strong and independent and good role model of young children. The tale is about a young teenage mermaid, called Ariel, who doesnt like her life under the sea and is much more fascinated by the human world. Regardless of her fathers warnings she exchanges her voice for legs with the evil witch to spend three days on land. She must make Prince Eric fall in love with her and kiss her or else she becomes the sea witchs forever. The witch reassures her the graceful form, the modest gait and speaking eyes. With such as these, it will easy to kindle a vain human male (Anderson, 1993,p. 8). It is clear from that short summary that the tale still managed to stereotype women. The message being sent out is that if Ariel relies on her beauty alone she will get the Prince to fall in love with her. Trites 1990 said, Undoubtedly, feminists have criticized Ariel because she seems to have little am bition beyond getting her prince. (http//charlottesmedia. blogspot. com/) The story of Mulan helped change the perception of women in Fairy tales but still managed to imply a message that women are inferior to men.Mulan is no ones trophy and to me is the first groundbreaking Disney delineation to show a woman to be capable of taking the same roles of men. The story is based on a Chinese story about a woman who saves china from the Huns. She goes to fight in the war instead of her father and displays traits that are stereotyped as only being male. She is a strong and a courageous woman and breaks social boundaries and expectations. However, Mulan is similar to Belle in Beauty and the Beast, as she too isnt seen as acceptable in society and this idea of gender obligations is evident.Women should be a homemaker and a wife, not cleaver and strong. Finally the film Shrek, created in the 22th century and displays beauty in a different way. Beauty is displayed on the inside in this new i mage of the princess, which I found to be really refreshing. The two leading characters are ogres. The film goes against the classical fairy tale characteristics. Princess Fiona is different from other princesses and does not wait for prince charming to rescue her. She is a dependent woman who is able to stand on her own two feet. She chooses Shrek as a husband and decides to live her own life as an ogre. This is a unique fairytale as Fiona overlooks physical beauty and is not saved by a male, which results in her having a better life. However she still does live her life as a princess. Unfortunately, many women today hold a princess attitude, and aspire to have a princess type of life. This attitude can be seen among some girls and young women. They often believe that marrying well, especially financially, is desirable, so they can easily live the life of a princess. This may very well be an effect caused by the women that are presented to us in these fairy tales since early childho od.Certainly a clear progression can be seen with regards the representation of women between the 17th-18th century fairy tales (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty) and the 19th -22nd century fairy tales (Mulan, Shrek). I do appreciate that the morals and values are changing in regard to fairytales in recent years. As a whole, however, In my impression I think that the fairy tales discussed portray a negative stereotype to young children and are not good role models. According to Zipes We can lodge to enjoy this harmless pastime of telling classical fairytales to our children, not realising the possible harm or harmlessness. Facebook vs Twitter Case Study Analysis Essay

Facebook (originally The facebook) is a social networking website launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, then 23, objet dart studying psychology at Harvard University. Membership was initially limited to students of Harvard College, but soon the social site was subsequently ext finaleed to other Boston universities, the ivy League and eventually all US universities (Yadav, 2006). It became Facebook. com in August 2005 after the sites address was obtained for a relatively meager $200,000. By the end of the following year it was also open to high schools. As of September 2006, Facebook was extended beyond educational associations to anybody with a registered email address. They seduce over clxxv million active users worldwide latestly and are growing every day. Facebooks mission statement seems simple Facebooks mission is to give sight the power to share and make the world more open and connected (Reagan, 2009). chirp still no business model but it has a new-made mission st atement To instantly connect people everywhere to whats more or less important to them. (Evans, 2011). Who is better than who? Or one could say who is going to be the king of the hill?Facebook has tried to purchase Twitter with no success. It is hard to say who will come emerge on top or who will be the ultimate winner of the social war. There are some key differences between the sites (Lacy, 2009). Its far easier to find people on Facebook and most of the succession you can tell if its actually them. Facebook and Twitter are both free sites and are both popular. Facebook and Twitter are both time conversations, but Twitter is a little faster. They both seem to have their good and bad qualities. Twitter has a character restriction and has no popups. Twitter users can also post to their Facebook page.Facebook does non have a character limit. They both can post pictures and videos, but Facebook has more capacity for sharing videos and photos without forcing you to bind out to so me other window (Lacy, 2009). Facebook has a better privacy blocking system, if you can find it with the ever changing improvements. A lot of users are not aware of this option. Facebook allows businesses to advertise and reach more people faster. Facebook makes there revenue off the ads on their site, witch keeps it free for their users. Facebook has games for their users to play as well. These games also amaze some of their revenue. Twitter has no games and the only source of revenue is its investors. Facebook is threatened with losing users to a less familiar, social networking website. The major problem that exists is the fact that Twitter has a controlled level of social networking. Facebook does not allow one way interaction options meaning that if I want to follow someones posts then they themselves would have to accept my friend request, and Facebook also does not allow someone to track real time information is always adding improvements that the client base does not like.Wi th this casualty it may mean that many Facebook members may leave and start using twitter because of some of the restrictions that are placed on the members of Facebook. The first alternative resolving is for Facebook to purchase stellar star technology and offer the capability to track real-time information. This solution will help to eliminate Twitters current advantage of having the capability to track real-time information. Another alternative solution is to develop a way for one-way relationships to be possible on Facebook, trance maintaining its security. Many users want to broadcast their status information, but not actually follow all of their status viewers and get somewhat irritated with the function of game postings that clog up their pages. I know I do to the point that I log off and sometimes go and check out Twitter. In conclusion, there will never be a happy medium here. Technology is constantly evolving and there will probably be another social network that will b e created and pose threats to both of these networks. In my opinion, Facebook is more personal, whereas Twitter is more Hollywood. Facebook deals with contacting old friends and family members and Twitter is about following an entertainer. Myspace is only out of space as there arent really too many users out there anymore. LinkedIn is a way to network via business and doesnt contain the content that any of these sites do, as it wouldnt be professional. Facebook will definitely be around for a long time, as will Twitter. some cant have one without the other, I know I cant.

Degree Plan Essay

For as long as I lav remember I wanted to be a police officer. As a sm each(prenominal)(a) boy, what caught my attention were the flashing lights and sirens on the police cars. It could kick in also been then the facts that police officer were permitted to carry a gun and had the ability to run red lights. This is why as I grew up and played games like cops and robbers, I was always the police officer. During my teenage eld, I later joined the auxiliary police officer and started to learn about police work. Thats when I realized that a police officer was nobody like I thought.I started to understand the role of the police was not as a symbol of power, but one of peace. I started to understand that monastic order needed law enforcement measures to uphold the laws that have been set for our citys and countys. I also learned that a police presence was the better scape in deterring crime and creating a safe environment for eachone. Police officers are in the community for all th e right reasons, to initiate us as children and educate our parents on safety. They were there when my friends and family needed them. Not only for the worse of times, but in the best as well. To me, police officer were my heros and I wanted to be one of them in order to be able to return to the community and provide the service and knowledge Ive gained over the years of growing up pursuing my dreams of being a police officer. Although Ive always wanted to be a police office, since I am mankind and had to grow from a boy to a man, I have made mistakes in my life growing up by allowing peer pressure got the best of me in some aspects.Although I did my best to overcome the pressures of high school, by distancing myself from those bad influences that is when I opened my eyes to figure out what do I want out of life and that I need to put me first and pursue my career. In September of2012 I decided to pursue my education for my children so I wrote down some options on a career change. So I looked into Empire College and saw that I can take online classes to pursue a degree and work at my leisure because I am a full time father and work two barters so I weart really have time.I would like to do this for my family so I am going to have to work hard so I can conquer my goals. So I am starting out with my associates degree I have registered for several classes this has been a mammoth gainsay since I havent been in school for about ten years. exactly in order for me to continue my dream of being a police officer by monitoring society I have to work a little hard and I will conquer this challenge for my family. I would love to become a police officer. It is a good job even though its a risky job depending on where you are working, but it is worth it.It has good benefits and a reasonable salary. Most important is that I think it will be a challenging and recognise career, and I think with my natural curiosity and desire to solve problems that I will be good at thi s. Ever since I was a little kid I have always been fascinated with becoming a police officer. Doing retributiveice the right way and making sure that people adjust government laws the right way is the kind of job I would like to pursue. This job is becoming a police officer.First semester I have interpreted Creative Writing, intro to biology , Western Civilization these classes are doing me get my associates degree Second semester I am registered for Corrections in American systems, degree planning, introduction to Algebra. These classes have helped me study and look into society instead of just getting thrown into a position that I have no clue about. Writing and Reading class was not one of my favorite but it gave me some ideas on understanding what I was reading and to elaborate on my writing.I enjoyed the compare and contrast short essays that I needed to write. I work as an EMT for Lutheran Medical so I love Biology. My job is interesting right now I am in Brooklyn where al l the action is I love to help people and love the action every day. It wants to make Brooklyn and there is action every day that is what I like I love helping people and I love the action. To be a police officer I want to change this society around since I was a child I remember listening to the sirens out the windowpane or a police officer chasing two kids because the stole an elderly woman handbag .This by far is not an easy job But this is a very serious job, every job is different and the way society is today you can never trust anybody. I am go along school so I understand and have an education. Working in /for our society today can be extremely difficult and I am a firm of an education to become a police officer. I might not use Shakespeare if there is a robbery but by chance I can distract him with a poem. Going to class again also will help me get back into terrene you need routine also you need to be educated and healthy. This is a serious job I feel that Police Officers are protecting our society everyday all day long. Officers do carry a lot on their shoulders they witness a lot and some jobs can be worse than others. I have learned that College is very time consuming its a full time job I am ready to receive some help from my counselor about the requirements that I would need to conquer my dreams . This isnt just any job this to make sure your society is safe and everyone understands. I do think it is important to have an education level.I have had about 10 years experience with police officers and fire department. I wouldnt switch over it for the world in a firm believer in succeeding what I like to do and knowing what to do. So I know I am starting at late but I really hope this second semester I do well so I can run off and start my career and enjoy it. I am trying my hardest to get all these done so I can just be in the action. Its almost over thats why its important to work hard and continue your education. Please remember its never too la te to follow your dreams

The Return: Shadow Souls Chapter 4

Youre shaking. Let me do it alone, Meredith said, putting a hand on mediocres shoulder as they stood together in front of Caroline Forbess house. bonnie started to tilt into the pressure, but do herself stop. It was humiliating to be shaking so obviously on a Virginia morning in late July. It was humiliating to be treated kindred a child, too. But Meredith, who was only six months older, looked more adult than usual today. Her dark hair was pulled back, so that her eyes looked very large and her olive-skinned spirit with its high cheekbones was shown to its best advantage. She could practically be my babysitter, decorous thinking dejectedly. Meredith had high heels on, too, instead of her usual flats. decorous felt smaller and younger than ever in comparison. She ran a hand through her strawberry-blond curls, trying to fluff them up a precious half inch higher.Im not scared. Im c-cold, Bonnie said with all the self-worth she could muster.I know. You feel something coming fr om there, dont you? Meredith nodded at the house before them.Bonnie looked sideways at it and then back at Meredith. Suddenly Merediths adultness was more square than annoying. But before she looked at Carolines house again she blurted, Whats with the spike heels?Oh, Meredith said, glancing down. Just practical thinking. If anything tries to grab my ankle this time, it gets this. She stamped and there was a satisfying clack from the sidewalk.Bonnie almost smiled. Did you b holler your brass knuckles, too?I dont need them Ill knock Caroline out again barehanded if she tries anything. But quit changing the subject. I can do this alone.Bonnie finally let herself put her own small hand on Merediths slim, long-fingered one. She squeezed. I know you can. But Im the one who should. It was me she invited over.Yes, Meredith said, with a slight, elegant curl of her lip. Shes always known where to stick in the knife. Well, whatever happens, Carolines brought it on herself. First we try to hel p her, for her sake and ours. Then we try to groom her get help. After that After that, Bonnie said sadly, theres no telling. She looked at Carolines house again. It lookedskewedin some way, as if she were seeing it through a distorting mirror. Besides that, it had a bad aura black slashed across an ugly shade of gray-green. Bonnie had never seen a house with so lots energy before. And it was cold, this energy, like the breath out of a meat locker. Bonnie felt as if it would suck out her own life-force and turn it into ice, if it got the chance. She let Meredith ring the gatewaybell. It had a slight echo to it, and when Mrs. Forbes answered, her interpreter seemed to echo slightly, as well. The inside of the house still had that funhouse mirror look to it, Bonnie thought, but even noncitizen was the feel. If she shut her eyes she would imagine herself in a much larger place, where the floor slanted sharply down. You came to see Caroline, Mrs. Forbes said. Her appearance shocked Bon nie. Carolines mother looked like an old woman, with gray hair and a pinched white face.Shes up in her room. Ill show you, Carolines mother said. But Mrs. Forbes, we know where Meredith broke off when Bonnie put a hand on her arm. The faded, shrunken woman was leading the way. She had almost no aura at all, Bonnie realized, and was stricken to the heart. Shed known Caroline and her parents for so long how could their relationships have come to this?I wont call Caroline names, no matter what she does, Bonnie vowed silently. No matter what. Evenyes, even after(prenominal) what shes done to Matt. Ill try to remember something good about her.But it was difficult to think at all in this house, much less to think of anything good. Bonnie knew the staircase was going up she could see each step above her. But all her other senses told her she was going down. It was a horrifying feeling that made her dizzy this sharp slant downward as she watched her feet climb. There was also a smell, str ange and pungent, of rotten eggs. It was a reeking, rotten odor that you tasted in the air.Carolines door was shut, and in front of it, lying on the floor, was a plate of food with a fork and carving knife on it. Mrs. Forbes hurried ahead of Bonnie and Meredith and quickly snatched up the plate, opened the door opposite Carolines, and placed it in there, shutting the door behind her.But just before it disappeared, Bonnie thought she saw movement in the heap of food on the fine bone china.Shell barely speak to me, Mrs. Forbes said in the same empty voice shed used before. But she did say that she was expecting you.She hurried past them, leaving them alone in the corridor. The smell of rotten eggs no, of sulfur, Bonnie realized, was very strong.Sulfur she recognised the smell from last years chemistry class. But how did such a horrible smell get into Mrs. Forbess elegant house? Bonnie turned to Meredith to ask, but Meredith was already shaking her head. Bonnie knew that expression.D ont say anything.Bonnie gulped, wiped her watering eyes, and watched Meredith turn the handle of Carolines door. The room was dark. Enough light shone from the hallway to show that Carolines curtains had been reinforced by milklike bedspreads nailed over them. No one was in or on the bed.Come in And shut that door fastIt was Carolines voice, with Carolines typical waspishness. A flood of backup man swept over Bonnie. The voice wasnt a male bass that shook the room, or a howl, it was Caroline-in-a-bad-mood.She stepped into the dimness before her.

Advantages of mass media Essay

Mass media refers collectively to all the media technologies that ar intended to reach a large audience via flock communication. There are various forms of throng media such as intercommunicate receiver, television, movies, magazines, newspapers and the World Wide Web. Mass Media enjoys a very bad role in our equals and thus, it is believed to influence our society. There are positive and negative effects of quite a little media on our society. This essay will discuss the advantages and detriments of mass media and pass on if the advantage or disadvantage push throughweighs the other. The first advantage of mass media is that it call forths democracy. Talk shows and debates that are conducted on the radio gives people chance to voice out their opinions and show up their views of ideas close a particular issue. This use of radios makes it a free market place of ideas where people get informed of the multiple ideas that can be learn about a topic. Also this advantage of ma ss media allows arguments to be otherwise of the discussed perspective of an issue to voice out the contrasting feelings of people without the fear of be pointed to by the authorities if opinions are subjective. Moreover, free press keeps the government under constant monitoring and checks. It helps the general public to question issues that highlight policy failures, maladministration, scandals and corruptions and this makes mass media the voice of the disadvantaged. A long tradition of liberal theorists claimed that a free and independent press within a nation can play a vital role in the process of democratization by contributing towards the right of expression, thought and conscience, strengthening the responsiveness of government to all citizens and providing a pluralist broadcast of political expression for a multiplicity of groups. Thus, radio being an example shows the positive relationship between mass media and democracy.Read more Advantages and Disadvantages of Mass Med iaFurthermore, mass media promotes health education. A way in which societies can grow is through good health and studies assert that media has a responsibility to help people live a healthy life. In Uganda, for instance, FM radios conducted programs where medical doctors were invited to a programto talk about general or specific diseases, their causes, symptoms and how to avoid these diseases or where to taste treatment. Namely, Radio-Wa conducted a program, Meet The Doctor, on which a doctor from Lira Hospital appeared every Sunday from 5.00 pm and discussed popular medical issues, such as, current health problems of reproductive health diseases and hinge onually transmitted diseases, for about an hour. Through another research, it was found that radio listeners took active part in these kinds of programs and they were able to learn about many diseases that they were suffering from unknowingly. Majority of the listeners were able to cure their diseases. Thus, mass media assists people to keep informed about medical and health issues. In addition, mass media plays a very vital role in accounting for agricultural trade. Radio, one of the fastest forms of mass communication, has been used in communicating farm information to farmers for a long time and since then radio has been used as a mass communication for agricultural development. Rural communities impoverishment information on proviso of input, early warning systems for drought and diseases, new technologies and market price and information about their competitors. Such information through mass media contributes to the expansion of agriculture. After sounding at factor such as the continuing expansion of market oriented agriculture and the increasing complexity of input requirements, studies suggested that there is a need for a continues education of farmers and extensions and thus concluded that radios and television would be a good way to disseminate information to them. Another research showed tha t 58 % of the respondents regarded radio as the most effective channel for dissemination of agricultural information. Thus information about trade from mass media would likely result in benefiting the altogether economy along side with the entrepreneurs of such trading businesses. On the other hand, mass media broadcasts negative information to teen agers, especially females, about sex related to topics. Movies and televisions are two examples of sources from where teens absorb information about sex and sexuality. These sources give unrealistic images of the portrayed topics. A study shows that an medium teen ager is exposed to virtually 14000references of sex of which less than a percent of the references imply information about abstinence, birth control, pregnancy risks, and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, mass media uses females as sex objects. In most music videos, females are approximately half the time dressed in clothes that expose their breast and rear ends. T he sexual drawing card of music videos and similar imaged mass media encourages teens as well as adults to expose themselves in public, inviting them to become victims of unethical crimes, such as, rape. Moreover, mass media depicts non realistic body images. This disadvantage of mass media depiction leads majority of the viewers toward unhealthy eating habits. Young people are getting encouraged by skinny models on the TV to lose weight and get their body into a sexy image. Researchers are claiming that males are becoming more insecure about their physical appearance as advertisements are painting images of idealistic well built muscular body. A study found that girls as young as eight years antiquated are weight conscious and are on strict diets. Many other females smoke to keep their weight off and through research, it is found out that there is approximately 400% increase in eating disorder since 1970.Like females, boys also tend to smoking to lose weight. A survey by Teens cl ipping reported that 27% of the females felt that media pressured them to have a perfect body and 69% of girls state that magazine models influence their thought of being slim and slender. Medias role in portraying unrealistic images of body figures can lead to serious health problems and deadly diseases as attendants to media are evidently being influenced by the false images. In addition, mass media promotes gender and racial unfairness in a society. Women, through media, are treated in disrespectful manners and are referred by the use of unethical words, such as, a whore or a slut. These kinds of words can be heard over the radio and seen in movies and televisions, for instance, the use of the word bitch in reference to women can be seen in wrestling programs exposed young children to witness it without supervision. Advertisements also promote gender biasness as they mostly include women in a sexual way to sell product. A study on advertisements showed that males are only seen in 25% of the advertisements on scantily wears, for example, underwear advertisements. The same study quoted that roughly 62% of white women were noticed in the same kind of advisements and the figure for opprobrious women was 53% only. Also, black women were mostly shown in animal prints and in predatory poses to highlight their powerlessness. Thus, mass media is openly bias towards the sexes and races of different kinds of people.Besides its other disadvantages, mass media is known to lead young children to aggressive violence. Media violence is harmful to kids because of their inability to differentiate between reality and fantasy. A study showed that by the age of 18, an average teen ager has viewed approximately 200000 acts of violence on television, ignoring other sources of mass media. These violent clips increase aggressiveness and anti social behavior in children and it also increases their proclivity for violence in the real life. Hence children are traumatized by the violen t images and as a result they end up committing violent acts themselves. In conclusion, it is clearly argued that mass media has both advantages and disadvantages. The issues that are discussed in this essay evidently suggest that the disadvantage of mass media outweighs the advantages yet some of the disadvantages of mass media can be avoided.

What do you consider to be the main causes of social conflict in Britain’s cities in the last ten years?

What do you consider to be the main causes of kind contradict in Britains cities in the last ten age? Stephenie Thourgood What do you consider to be the main causes of hearty contrast in Britains Cities in the last ten years? This essay aims to introduce types of mixer conflict that prevail in todays association and identify possible causes to the brotherly conflict that has occurred in British cities at heart the last decade. Social conflict is the struggle between privates or groups of tribe within a society that remove opposing beliefs/ posts to other groups. From these struggles, tensions atomic number 18 throwd and be expressed in a variety of shipway ofttimes through anti-social behaviour much(prenominal) as theft, drugs, riots, attacks, demonstrations, strikes, hooliganism and vandalism. The main focus of this paper volition be the causes behind the riots in British cities in the last ten years, as riots are a form of social conflict easier to measure than t he other forms rampages occur sporadic altogethery and last for a reliable duration. Crime for example is an ongoing process in all areas of the country. The essay will conclude by suggesting sorts to be made to reduce social conflict in Britain.Britain has a history of city riots that were in all probability most prominent in the 1980s in areas such as Brixton and Manchester. at that place train been thirteen preserve riots between 1991 and 1992 where the constabulary temporarily lost control over the violence. All of the riots occurred in council estates on the outer boundary of London in low-income areas with long standing socio-economic problems. Unemploy handst levels were far above the national aver mount up. The participants were preponderantly novel duster British males aged between 10 and 30 years old. There tended to be a steep concentration of young people, in some areas over half of the residents were under 24 years of age (Power, A 1997. ppix). Individuals in society have labelled this group of people the under layer. There are except contrary understandings of what is meant by the under sept. It would seem that in a time where the class system is supposedly dead, class balances still outlast. The underclass in this paper will be considered as people with low didacticsal attainment, a wishing of adequate skills . ,shared spatial location, dependency on upbeat, unemployment and under-employment pathological family structures and the inter-generational transmission of mendicancy involvement in the unreported economy and a pre-disposition to criminal and disorderly behaviour( Crowther, C, 1997 pp7). In the way that the working class had little power in the capitalist system until they formed a global alliance of all workers (proletariat), the underclass too struggle to make a difference until they unite and riot (Dicken, P 1990). There are many reasons behind social conflict and in that location are also catalysts that trigger the social disorder such as riots.Community is oftentimes a group of people with shared interests, a neighbourhood where residents feel a sense of identification and belonging. Traditionally a sense of company was ground around the neighbourhood you resided. This concept is fast deteriorating as new friendship identities within communities evolve e. g. the fairylike community and hea becauseish communities. These divisions within the community produce conflict as the various groups have different interests and sensed priorities in the neighbourhood (Hogget, P, 1997). Social tensions also occur due to demographical factors surrounding the communities. The housing estates that often profess unpeaceful outbreaks tend to have a population of predominantly young people, unemployed or on a low income, lively in council housing. The estate is then branded an economically deprived area. If there were a mix in the wealth of the estate then role models for the less affluent would exist and give the deprived younger resident something to aspire to. Due to the young age of a massive percentage of the residents, they are easily influenced and attracted to the mobilized violence, as there is support from fellow young residents and peers.Smaller groups of youngsters vivacious on the estates would find it difficult to make an impression as numbers would be too low-pitched to cause the bountiful scale of disorder evident in the riots of the last decade. A mix of more(prenominal) mature households with younger families would provide stronger community constraints (Power, A etal, 1997, ppxi). There was an adjoin in the amount of migrants living in Britain since the 1950s, this is no longer encouraged and constraints have been placed upon the process. Newly arriving immigrants were housed in the poorer areas of Britain.Obviously different pagan groups have different cultures and interests. By housing them alongside the poorer British residents, very different groups were hale to live together in one community. As a result of this process there became a high concentration of poverty stricken ethnic nonage groups living in densely overpopulated areas, which caused tensions and compact on local services. Equal opportunities policies sought to eliminate racial discrimination suffered by the ethnic minorities, by increasing the amount of minority employees.White unemployed residents job-hunting would find themselves in direct competition with the minority groups and therefore feel bitter that the minority groups faecal matter obtain work in Britain where some of the British can not (Crowther, C 1997). Although race was not a dominant issue in the riots, various(prenominal) minority families became targets of hate (Power, A etal. 1997 pp 20) The white residents of the estates wanted to blame someone for their undesirable internet site and targeted ethnic minorities as scapegoats to take their anger out upon in some of the riots. The economic dis advantage of the residents of these estates also contributed to the outbreaks. development was often not rewardd by families on the estates, as they too had never had the importance of education demonstrated to them. Due to the lack of education, they knew of no alternative option to voice their opinions other than by violent methods such as saturnalia. Low educational attainment meant that children did not have the skills required of them to bewilder a member of the labour force, and so often became dependent upon welfare (Crowther, C 1997).The provision of welfare undermines individual responsibility by giving rational human agents the incentives to not work and provide for themselves, thereby creating welfare dependency (Crowther, C 1997. pp9). Girls very rarely played any major part in the rioting. This can be explained by the fact that girls achieved higher in school. They were more successful than boys in gaining employment and so had a sense of self-fulfilment. As boys ed ucational attainment levels were lower they were exposed to the feeling of failure, which carried on into their years of job seeking (Power, A etal, 1997).Many of the girls may have been mothers and as mother women may have recognised their responsibilities socially and did not want to be associated with the violence. Males, however, did not maintain their social role as a father and readily participated in the riots (Ginsberg, N 1993). The recession contributed to rioting also as it caused changes in the labour market that when combined with racial competition led to ever increasing tensions Throughout the phase of their struggle to improve their market situation the white labour force often entered into antagonistic relations with moody labourers. Thus the segregation of white from black workers is shaped by individual attitudes and actions (Crowther, C 1997, pp 12) The young unemployed people become bored as they have much free time and limited finance to pursue on interesting a ctivities/hobbies. As a result of this they often turn to crime for means of enjoyment, excitement and to append their income. Unemployment can give people a feeling of low self worth and a lack of compliance from their family. Various types of crime such as stealing a car may often earn them respect from their peers and families especially if there is financial gain. This had a circular effect however as crime on the estate caused conflict between the victimised residents and the criminal population of the area (Altman, I 1975). Political factors can also help to explain the reasons behind social conflict. The areas that tend to be prone to rumpus tend to be areas that major political relation programmes are focussed upon. The presidential term created massive programmes that entailed drop money to improve housing, transport and urban renewal. An estate based housing office, a tenants association, health projects, community development trusts, policing projects are examples of the types of programmes initiated. They aimed to improve the immediate vicinity of the poorer estates, but the programmes had a short-term impact. It is true that the projects better the feeling of life for the residents, but nothing was done to increase education or job prospects. The government provided the estates with no means to continually support themselves and sustain their improved lifestyle. After time the services became string down again and the unemployed resident is still poor and frustrated. Government resources were scarce as they move to divide the budget between all the different needs of the sub-communities within the community (Hogget, P 1997). The court of growing dependency by community organisations on such programmes in any areas became apparent. community groups often found themselves in a struggle for scarce resources which exacerbated existing lines of tension between communities of difference ( Hoggett, P 1997 pp10).Residents were previously not invol ved in the decision-making process on how funding was to be played out they had no control over what was done in their community space. Had they been consulted they would probably have opted for a dodge that aimed to obtain businesses reinvestment in the area. Most externally funded programmes were driven by outside constraints and did very little to change the prospects for young men or their stake in what happened (Power, A etal 1997. ppx). Social aspects are considered to cause social conflict. All of the aforementioned reasons for social conflict make pass to an accumulation of pressure upon a family.Home is sensed as a haven where people can take shelter from society, if the home is of poor quality and overcrowded with family breakdown there is no escape for those residing there they are constantly faced with their departure and problems (Dickens, P, 1990). An increase in single parent families means for many youngsters there is no role model to reinforce ideal behaviour. Fr om a study on youth and crime undertaken by The Joseph Rowntree Foundation it was discovered that damaged adults create damaged children (Power, A etal 1997).Poor quality parenting, parental conflict, little enthusiasm for education, criminal behaviour and poverty set examples to children that they too would follow. Pressure on the head of the family to be the provider can lead to tensions peculiarly if the family is in poverty and the parents are unemployed and dependent on welfare. The rest of the family may lose respect for that person, as they cannot provide an affluent lifestyle for their children. The media contribute to social conflict, as they provided a method by which the residents could communicate to the wider society. The media always reported on the riots and often exaggerated the situation. In some cases the media have been prosecuted for back up youths to riot so that the reporters could gain a good story for the sake of ratings. the newspaper headlines provide a re lentless reportage of the consequences of the collapse of excluded communities (Hoggett, P 1997 pp13) Areas were often stereotyped as macrocosm bad by the media. The estates then experienced difficulties in trying to escape this labelling especially when applying for jobs. Weak social control caused by loose links with the wider society also contributed to social conflict. The youths were rarely punished for the riots and often gained support, attention and funding from the Government as a result. Due to lack of enforcement upon them they were constantly pushing the boundaries. They snarl they had nothing to lose by rioting. Changes in society lead to increased tensions between marginalized groups and the jurisprudence service. The police provided little protection to the community, they solitary(prenominal) responded to reported crimes. Due to the intimidation of the residents from the criminals on the estates, police struggled to find witnesses for the incidents. The police wer e therefore limited. Tensions between the criminals and the police grew, as the youths antagonised the police knowing that the police were unable to arrest them (Crowther, C 1997). During the riots the battle between the police and the youths was therefore often personal (Power, A etal, 1997). A diagram to show how rioting may occur. Riot Denial of voice Alternative power Boys excluded from family, Control battle school, work, leisure facilities Violence in frequent areas Loss of control Alternative voice Control vacuum Gang FormationPolice argufy Hard tough style Rumbling disorder Intimidation, law-breaking Display of power Notoriety (Power A etal, 1997 pp53) Several case studies can be used to reinforce the reasons given. I have selected blackbird Lees, and Bradford. Blackbird Lees is a housing estate located on the periphery of a large town in the Midlands in the 1950s and 1960s to house workers from the local industries. Only 8% of the houses were owner-occupied. The estate h ad few basic services such as shops, a medical centre, public houses and a bus route to the town centre. The population was predominantly young with 56% being under the age of 25, and 94% of the estates population were white. Unemployment levels were high at 42% and 22% of households were single parented. By the mid 1980s the estate was perceived as being one of the least desirable estates in the area. The area has a history of anti-social behaviour such as crime and harassment. The ethnic minorities were usually the first to be harassed. In 1992, the estate was awarded 15 million pounds to improve housing, services, diversify the incumbency and increase resident involvement.A particular activity of the youths was to steal and ride motorbikes over the large areas of blossom space near to the estate. Residents wanting to use the green for other purposes felt too intimidated to do so. Petitions were drawn up and handed to the police who found it hard to impose control. Bikes were dif ficult to chase and often the bikers outnumbered the police. The riot was triggered by the arrest of three youths for a motorbiking related offence. Later that day 50 youths congregated and caused damage to the surrounding area in protest. More youths were arrested and the disorder continued and escalated over the following nights. On the fifth night 150 police with protective equipment took control of the situation and the disturbances ceased. Many residents, police and Councillors felt the disturbances were minor, and that the media exaggerated the events. There were conflicting perspectives of the role of the police some believed they neglected the brewing problems for too long, whilst others believed they overreacted to the disturbance (Power, A etal 1997) Bradford is another area that suffered riots only this year. Bradford used to be dominated by the textile sedulousness due to the industrys decline many people were made unemployed.During the summer of 2001, riots broke out s parked by the superior general election. The area has a large ethnic minority population, high unemployment numbers and a substantial young population. A high percentage of voters supported the British Nationalist Party (BNP). The BNP gained much of their support by feeding from the tensions between the minorities and the whites. The BNP fuelled ideas that the Asians were taking all the benefits and jobs from the whites, and that the Asians were the reason the whites were deprived. Both gangs had been involved in attacks prior to these riots. integrity night the Asians congregated in the streets and caused a full scale violent riot where the local vicinity was attacked and vandalised. It is mind they did this due to the propaganda spread by the BNP, which made them feel alienated in their own neighbourhood. The riot was very territorial fighting for social space to exist freely within (www. bbc. co. uk. news 2001). In conclusion, social conflict is the result of a concoction of fa ctors that when fused together result in an explosion of disorder. The factors are social, economical, racial, demographical, political and geographical (Benyon, J 1987).When the status of these factors leads to a socially excluded deprived class of people who feel discriminated against, rioting is often witnessed. There are however, some more deprived areas where rioting has never occurred. This may be because there is stronger police control, or the age of the population may be evenly dispersed. All the areas that witnessed riots had large groups of young unemployed males living in a similar deprived geographical location (Crowther, C 1997). These men are more vulnerable to group solidarity with other, similarly excluded, vulnerable, disorientated and poorly prepared young men (Power, A etal, 1997. p51)These men were socially excluded and so rioted to release aggression, to be noticed, and to attempt to break the vicious stack they were born into. Riots are perceived by many as t he revenge of the socially excluded (Crowther, C. 1997). Riots can produce results. The people involved in the riots are very rarely reprimanded for their actions, instead more money and programmes are set up to improve the infrastructure, services and support. Positive action needs to be taken in order to prevent further outbreaks. For a stable future young people should be taught that there are other non-violent ways to voice their opinions and recognise that an interest in their education can lead to better job prospects. A population mix should be generated in order to diversify the types of people living together. Activities within the community to relieve boredom and give people a shared interest should be initiated. Improved support should be given to parents and families and to community development groups. These ideas should be taken into accounting system when planning future housing development and regeneration (Power, A etal, 1997).It is also argued that planning decisio ns from the past have contributed to the racial tensions and exclusion of certain groups by creating ghetto type areas through the housing policies (Solomos, J 1993). There are many aspects as discussed previously that when integrated lead to social conflict the major cause being the long term exclusion and deprivation that the so-called underclass are made to suffer. They endeavour to change their situation but with so many limitations upon them, they are rarely successful other than through rioting. Multiple deprivation has dangerous consequences.
